### Depicting Death without Sensationalism Interviewer: When translating the brutal gimmick of 'Return by Death' into animation, what was the primary directorial policy you kept in mind? Masaharu Watanabe: Rather than simply making it grotesque for shock value, the priority was underscoring Subaru's 'psychological isolation' and 'irreversible sense of loss'. I constantly collaborated with Nagatsuki-sensei on how to imbue the screen with the despair of Subaru being the only person who remembers the tragedy. Tappei Nagatsuki: For Subaru, death can never be treated as a 'convenient retry button.' Every single death is accompanied by monstrous physical agony and soul attrition; he can never simply get used to it. If that psychological weight isn't conveyed, his story collapses.
Q: How are the save points for Subaru's 'Return by Death' determined? Can they be moved by Subaru's own conscious will?
Q: When depicting Subaru as a protagonist, could you tell us what point you are most conscious of? A: While Subaru is the protagonist of an isekai / other-world transfer story, he does not possess exceptional combat ability or an invincible cheat skill. The only power he possesses is the harrowing ability known as 'Return by Death'. Because of that, when confronted with hardship, I am constantly conscious of realistically depicting his human weakness and strength—struggling ungracefully in the mud, wrestling with agony, and yet still striving to step forward.
On stage, author Tappei Nagatsuki revealed that he held extensive consultations with the animation production staff at WHITE FOX for the anime adaptation. He emphasized that meticulous care was taken to convey the visceral tension and agonizing despair inherent in 'Return by Death' through visual animation, delivering a passionate message urging the audience to eagerly anticipate the clash against the Witch Cult awaiting in the second cour.
### Regarding the author's narrative intent in Arc 2 at Roswaal Manor While Arc 1 served as an introduction and suspenseful thriller, Arc 2 was essentially about 'the horror of strangers living under the same roof without established trust.' The maids who treat Subaru courteously on the surface harboring deep suspicion behind his back—even culminating in torture and execution—showcases the uncompromising severity of this world.
Nice to meet you all, or if you are joining from 'Shousetsuka ni Narou', long time no see. I am Tappei Nagatsuki. To be able to deliver this work into your hands in the form of a published book is a joy like a dream to me. The story of the powerless, foolish, yet never-giving-up Natsuki Subaru begins right here. Meeting the silver-haired girl Emilia, coughing up blood as he defies destiny—I would be deeply honored if you would accompany Subaru on this journey until the very end.
