### Depicting Death without Sensationalism Interviewer: When translating the brutal gimmick of 'Return by Death' into animation, what was the primary directorial policy you kept in mind? Masaharu Watanabe: Rather than simply making it grotesque for shock value, the priority was underscoring Subaru's 'psychological isolation' and 'irreversible sense of loss'. I constantly collaborated with Nagatsuki-sensei on how to imbue the screen with the despair of Subaru being the only person who remembers the tragedy. Tappei Nagatsuki: For Subaru, death can never be treated as a 'convenient retry button.' Every single death is accompanied by monstrous physical agony and soul attrition; he can never simply get used to it. If that psychological weight isn't conveyed, his story collapses.

Q: When depicting Subaru as a protagonist, could you tell us what point you are most conscious of? A: While Subaru is the protagonist of an isekai / other-world transfer story, he does not possess exceptional combat ability or an invincible cheat skill. The only power he possesses is the harrowing ability known as 'Return by Death'. Because of that, when confronted with hardship, I am constantly conscious of realistically depicting his human weakness and strength—struggling ungracefully in the mud, wrestling with agony, and yet still striving to step forward.
