Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- New Edit Edition, and we're already in week three! It's starting!
The Happy Roswaal Mansion Family / The Morning of Our Promise Is Still Distant

Man, a week goes by fast...
"An unfamiliar ceiling" is a surprisingly obscure little joke, which honestly kind of startles me...
"Heh heh heh, maybe I'll make you suffer a little in revenge for all the trouble you've caused me."
These paintings on display around here feel like the kind of thing the successive heads of the Mathers family either collected or painted themselves.
Subaru and Beatrice's first meeting, going by this, gives both of them the absolute worst first impression of each other.
By the way, as those of you who know what happens later in the anime are aware, it's also possible to mana drain someone without making it hurt.
You can suck the contents out of a plastic bottle with a straw through the opening, or you can crush the bottle to force the contents out. That mana drain just now was the latter kind.
By the way, it was announced, but Konomi Suzuki will also be doing the Season 2 OP for us! Look forward to it! Though I'm the one looking forward to it most!
With Ram and Rem's entrance, we also get Emilia-tan's first outfit change.
The setting is that Puck chooses Emilia's clothes every day, which is why her hairstyle and outfit are different every day. There are a lot of variations, and as the original author, I'm extremely satisfied.
That was the first "Emilia-tan," wasn't it.
The reason Subaru calls Emilia "Emilia-tan" is because of a kind of awkward emotional twistiness very typical of an adolescent boy, but well, please don't think too much about it. This way of addressing her was for something I wanted to do much, much later in the anime. I only finally wrote it recently, though.
It's great how Puck gets a cute sound effect every time he moves. It gives him that magical-girl mascot feel.
If you think of it as a kitten that doesn't run away, then yeah, that's a pretty hard-to-come-by reward...
By the way, Beatrice almost never shows up for meals with everyone else, so the reason she's in the dining hall this morning is about 90% because she wants to see Puck, and maybe 10% everything else.
Kyaah! Roswaal-sama!!
I think that very first line just now was pretty much sincere.
By the way, the seating arrangement isn't specifically fixed, but Subaru just naturally sat down next to Emilia.
This is getting into later material, but as for the Royal Selection, the candidates' backgrounds aren't publicly disclosed in detail. Still, rumors like "so-and-so from wherever is trying to put forward a candidate" do circulate, so it's fairly well known that Margrave Mathers is making moves.
By the way, the Kingdom of Lugunica is said to be in its 42nd generation, but the neighboring Vollachia Empire was founded around the same time and has gone through about 1.5 times as many generations.
Kyaah! Ainz-sama!!
Come to think of it, in my Chaldea, Merlin was the very first one to hit max Bond Lv.
As for the wardrobe room, it's basically full of Roswaal's outfits. By the way, the women's uniform that happens to fit Subaru belonged to a maid who left the mansion a little while ago. She'll appear starting in Season 2.
"Door Crossing" is actually pretty advanced magic. It takes talent to see through it too, but in this other world, that's one of Subaru's rare genuinely useful talents. He used up all his luck on that.
This amount of work Ram has here is still overwhelmingly less than Rem's. Of course, it's all with the assumption that Subaru will help, and she's trying to make him do things like the once-a-month jobs she doesn't do very often, so you can really see big sis's lazy streak showing.
That kind of cut is honestly no joke. Looks painful.
The frequency of finger injuries is like, how many places did you cut yourself?
The fact that she makes a comment like that after only knowing him for a few days really shows a glimpse of what onee-sama is like. Very nice.
This exchange here got parodied in Genshiken Nidaime, and that made me really happy...
Normally, the heroine is the one who's supposed to get lots of cuts on her fingers and wear bandages... or so Bob suspiciously wondered.
The first E.M.T. showed up. Between calling her Emilia-tan and everything else, there really wasn't any point in Arc 1 where he could calmly talk things out, so all those bottled-up feelings around that are overflowing here.
Subaru really does go greet Beatrice every night. The distance between them doesn't shrink, though.
By the way, Subaru is very good at waking up, so he can spring right out of bed and start moving immediately. On the other hand, he has trouble falling asleep. He has nightmares pretty often.
Emilia is the opposite type: she falls asleep easily, but has a hard time waking up. Rem also has trouble falling asleep, but she's good at waking up. Onee-sama is bad at both falling asleep and waking up.
The cuts on their fingers alone aren't definitive, but you can tell from their behavior that the sense of closeness with the two of them has been reset. Which just shows that the relationship really had gotten to about that level.
This is, for the record, also the first time the restart point changes. From here on, when the arc changes, the starting point changes too, and there are rules to how those starting-point changes work. Since he's already met Beatrice, that's at least a small emotional comfort.
Beatrice gets a lot of eye close-ups comparatively speaking, but I feel like the design where there are butterflies in her irises is the first example of one of those "what exactly is going on inside Otsuka-san's head?" moments. And apparently there will be many more such moments going forward.
That way of turning around just now is only allowed if you're a cute girl...!
By the way, I think Roswaal is probably the character we discussed the most in terms of character design. I don't think that's been surpassed even now.
As the author, I think the usual conventions of loop stories are difficult to handle strictly, and that's why things went this way.
Roswaal's precious no-makeup look. Roswaal is a mage, but surprisingly, he's trained his body properly too.
Machines haven't developed in this world, but instead they use these convenient things called magic stones. Hot water and cooking use fire magic stones and the like, so I think even ordinary households don't really have that much trouble.
I think Subaru only had the one pair of underwear he was wearing, but probably, just like with his tracksuit, after everything that happened Rem mass-produced more for him.
A story about mass-producing Subaru's tracksuits and underwear... I feel like I could write a short story out of that.
You can think of "I characters" as hiragana, "Ro characters" as katakana, and "Ha characters" as kanji. Basically, I think all countries use the same writing systems.
Since onee-sama is supposed to be bad at falling asleep, you could look at her being asleep here and question whether she's really asleep at all.
Bondrewd-kyo...
Kobayashi-san is going through something awful again...
After Ram and Rem grew up, they often accompanied Roswaal to parties and such, but before that, whenever there was an occasion that required bringing someone along, Frederica probably went with him, so the one who likely wore the dresses in the wardrobe room was...
Onee-sama is very dexterous, so even without making any special effort, she can peel vegetables all the way through without breaking the peel even once.
As for the people at the mansion whose hair Rem cuts, Subaru eventually becomes one of them too, so during Memory Snow and such, Rem was properly cutting his hair.
Ram's instruction just now is probably also because she doesn't really want Subaru and Rem to be left alone together.
These are the Arlam Village kids Subaru will become close with later, and if you want to know what Petra, who'll be a regular in Season 2 as well, first thought of Subaru, please check the short story collection. Or Kaigetsu-san's Arc 2 manga adaptation!
Subaru's walking along the edge of the bridge, but he's probably the type who only steps on the white parts of a crosswalk.
That smile is genuine.
When Emilia-tan comments, "More than I expected," it makes you wonder if she thought Subaru was just playing around.
There was a lot of trial and error in how Emilia-tan pronounces foreign words, but when we found the answer for "date" as "deito," it felt like quite a breakthrough.
For the record, he properly brought up the promise with Emilia so they could make it to tomorrow, in line with the number of days that ended up getting redone.
Styx Helix...
Apples are the fruit of beginnings, so that's why Re:Zero features ringa... or something clever-sounding like that is not the reason at all!
He messed up last time, so he's staying up on watch.
The time he overslept on a school trip was back in elementary school. His mom turned off the alarm clock right away and then just went back to sleep.
That was probably back when the three of them slept side by side in a row.
Once Subaru realizes something has happened, where his feet carry him is to Emilia, who might be in danger. Of course, calling for help was the other option.
If you took a direct hit from this iron ball, this is exactly what it'd look like. A perfect hundred-point depiction.
Ah, it rolled over.
You don't have to hide it!?
And with that one cut that even surprised the author, thank you again this week for joining us for Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-! Man, looking at it like this, things escalated fast! Ending on Rem's smile, see you again next week!!
